On Tuesday, 9th of June, students from across the school gathered for a Memorial Inauguration Ceremony. This year’s ceremony brought together Alex, Adam and Ethan, Eva, Liam, Oliver, Hannah, Ella, Mya, Elsa, Rory and Rahsek.

The new memorial is to commemorate 400 individuals who have no known grave from the First World War, predominately from the UK and Ireland. The event is significant for Brookwood Cemetery because they commemorate a lot of people from the First and Second World War and this memorial will remember even more people from the First World War.

It matters for Gordon’s School because some Gordonians served in the First World War and some of the 400 individuals may have been Gordonians or at least served with some of them.

One highlight of the afternoon was when Princess Anne talked about the history of the memorial. A particular memorable moment happened when we were playing and primary school kids were watching and then they took it in turns to play with the base, snare and tenor drums.

An even more significant moment was when a 9-year-old girl read a poem to us that she has written herself.

This event showed that Brookwood Cemetery will continue to do great things to commemorate all the people who served for us in the First and Second World War.

It was striking to me to see how many headstone there were at Brookwood Cemetery commemorating the many people who died in these wars in the line of duty.
