Starting Year 7 at Gordon’s is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. As a new student, I got lost quite a lot at first, but eventually I learned where everything was—and discovered a few tips that really helped me along the way. Here are my top 10 tips to help you settle in and enjoy the journey!

🌟 Quick Tips That Saved Me

· If you need to go to Food Tech, “Kitchener” is NOT the place you are looking for.

· If you need to take medication or are hurt, “Medway” is NOT the place—go to Meddy.

· You change P7 as follows:

➤ Tuesday and Wednesday P7 changes every half term

➤ Monday and Thursday P7 changes every full term

·Your morning activity changes by day:

➤ Monday = Chapel

➤ Tuesday = Form

➤ Wednesday = Assembly

➤ Thursday = Form

➤ Friday = House Meeting

·If you have any extra-curricular activities (e.g. Snare Drum), always leave 5 minutes early so you’re not late.

·Always have your shirt tucked in—you might get into trouble if not.

·Write neatly—if your writing is illegible, you might get a lower mark.

·Keep your books tidy and don’t waste space.

·And finally… Always BLEED GREEN!

🧭 Top 10 Tips For Settling In

1.Be kind and friendly

You’ll meet loads of new people – from different primary schools and even other countries! Smile, say hi, and try to remember names. Friends make everything easier.

2.Get organized early

At first, it’s easy to forget things like your tie, prep, water bottle, or even where your classroom is! Use your timetable, pack your bag the night before, and keep important stuff in your locker (and don’t forget to lock it!).

3.Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Everyone – teachers, older students, and your House staff – are really helpful. If you’re lost, confused, or need help with prep, just ask. No one expects you to know everything straight away.

4.Try everything (even if it’s new or scary!)

Join clubs, go to band auditions, sing in choir, and try new P7 subjects—even if you’re unsure. You might discover something you’re great at!

5.It’s okay to not be perfect

Sometimes you’ll get things wrong—miss a deadline, get a negative, or feel behind. That’s normal. What matters is trying your best and learning from it.

6.Be honest about what you find hard

Whether it’s rugby tackles, IT prep, or remembering instructions – tell someone. Teachers can help with strategies, extra support, or movement breaks if needed.

7.Use your House as your home base

Your House is where you can breathe, play, recharge, and feel supported. Talk to your House parents and prefects – they genuinely care.

8.Stay on top of prep – but don’t overdo it

Try to do your prep early and ask for help if needed. Three good prep sessions a week are better than stressing every night. You could also try Friday prep—it’s calmer and has fewer people.

9.Take care of yourself

Sleep, eat (the food at Gordon’s is stratospheric!), take breaks, and speak up if you’re unwell or anxious. Meltdowns happen – and people will help you through them.

10. Be proud of who you are

Whether you’re great at drumming, sports, maths, science, tech, or making friends—that’s what makes you special. Gordon’s is a big place, but there’s room for everyone to shine in their own way.
