Congratulations to Tilly who won the coveted Egypt Prize for Y7 Creative Writing. The poetry competition launched in October this year alongside National Poetry Day.

The brief was to write a poem describing their first impressions of Gordon’s School. We are delighted to publish her poem here.

As I walked in

As I walked in my heartbeat grew faster,

what more could go wrong? It’s already a disaster!

My eyes flickered, scanning for my friends

This journey’s going bad, swerving with any bends

My hands are sweaty, spilling out with fear

I feel like I’m the only odd one out, almost like a lost deer

First periods starts and a handful of thoughts run through

my head,

I don’t know where I’m going or being lead

I sit there confused, staring at my work,

I pretend that I get it and put on a fake smirk

The teacher is really nice and tries to guide my way,

She tells me I’m a “superstar” and puts her kindness on

Maybe this isn’t so bad, maybe it can get better

I was scared to go to Gordon’s, ever since I got that letter

Before I left for school, there were tears in my eyes

I was expecting the worst, but that was all lies,

I made many friends and they all seemed nice,

Gordon’s is the best, I don’t even need to think twice

Not everyone will have the same journey, and we need to

remember that,

Some will be as loud as a dog, some quiet as a cat

As I walked in my heartbeat grew faster,

What more could go wrong? It’s already a disaster!

As I left the grounds my heart was filled with joy,

To experience the first day of Gordon’s again is a

wish of every girl and boy.
