Have you all ever wondered why we go to Guildford cathedral every year? Students gather at Guildford Cathedral for the memorial of General Gordon’s Death. General Gordon died in 1885, with his death falling close to the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul. Both were formidable men, and General Gordon battled with his own human strength and dignity, as well as courage.
Years 7,8,10 and staff all joined as one to commemorate General Gordon’s death and all his achievements in his years. The cathedral looked beautiful with its painted glass and open spaces and the ceiling up high and wide, a lovely space to remember. A year 8 student stated, “I think it’s a beautiful cathedral and the artwork is nice – the sound of the bagpipes playing is lovely. ”
The atmosphere was uplifting and bright, the service including hymns and the anthem both sung by the choir. The Head Girl and Boy read from the first book of Samuel. Through the service many prayers were said, the pipe lament was played and the commemoration, as well as readings featuring Reverend Graham Wright, Very Reverend Bob Cooper and a welcome by the Reverend Canon Rachel Young.
Another student remarked, “I like getting a new perspective every year about General Gordon.” This opportunity gives us time to reflect on who brought Gordon’s School to life.
