Founded by UNESCO to celebrate authors, promote publishing and promote literacy, World Book Day was made an international holiday in 1995. Yet, the day only became popular in the UK in 1997. Since then World Book Day has grown into a global celebration of literature and has become a powerful way to inspire a love for reading in all people. However, in schools specifically, World Book Day is used to inspire children to develop a lifelong love of reading.

World Book Day this year at Gordon’s was a fun event filled with activities. Students had the opportunity to be creative by designing their own fortune tellers inspired by the books they love.

An Easter egg hunt-style competition was held where over 2000 printed words were hidden around site. Students had to collect these words and collate them into a story.

This Inter-house competition was hotly contested but ultimately the prize was won by China who was commended for their excellent use of vocabulary and emotion.

Second place went to Balmoral who was praised for their gothic story featuring a great, albeit humorous twist at the end!
