The Inter-House Debating finale took place in the Rec on Wednesday, 19th November. The two houses represented in the finale were Kensington and Victoria. The hotly debated topic was “This house believes the UK should prioritise cyber threats over traditional military threats.” Kensington House took to the floor as proposition and Victoria House as opposition.

Victoria claimed victory with their confident opening speech and strong evidence, but Kensington was a worthy opponent with great engagement and outstanding counter arguments.

“ I believe everyone was very confident when they spoke and had excellent engagement with the audience, made great points and had strong arguments overall,” said Vedi, a student spectator.

A highlight of the afternoon was the audience participation in the form of their challenging questions. This allowed both teams to really think about the points they were making.

We (Florence, Victoria, Katherine, Amber, Ella and Charlotte) learnt a lot through this opportunity and developed our debating skills – allowing us to grow and come back stronger next year. As participants, we felt very nervous before speaking, but once we started we became confident and afterwards we felt immensely proud of what we had achieved.

We hope this competition will not only helps us to grow in our debating skills, but also inspire the audience to pursue debating here at Gordon’s.
