Golf at Gordon’s can be split into the Senior Squad and Junior Squad. The Junior Squad largely makes up the players who like to play golf for development and enjoyment, while the Senior Squad frequently engage in competitions against other schools. However, both squads play in the Schools Golf competitions (which occur roughly once a month).
Recently, the Gordon’s VI of the Senior Squad participated in, and won, the SSGT HMC Foursomes Regional competition. Their most recent match was against Winchester College. Their players were all Handicap Scratch (very good at Golf), so Gordon’s victory was an amazing achievement. Following this, Gordon’s will go through to the national stage, competing against eight of the top schools.
While all the Gordon’s VI showed their incredible abilities, it would be a disservice not to mention the performances of Noah and Ollie, who scored 5 and 4 over respectively (5 over meaning Noah had a better score than his opponent for five holes of the course). It is the sixth time Gordon’s has qualified for the finals over the last nine years, showing the remarkable skill and talent of Gordon’s golfers.
Furthermore, the SSGT National U18 Tournament saw Gordon’s School place 4th after three rounds of golf, being 25 over par (only 3 away from third while being 16 ahead of fifth). Again, the exceptional performances of Harry and Jonnie must not be understated, with both placing within the top 5 best U18 golfers (Harry placing joint first in the first round and ending only 5 over par, while Jonnie ended the competition 6 over par).
Looking at the bigger picture, the Golfing season ending rankings by the ISGA (Independent Schools Golfing Association) places Gordon’s in third place with 164 points. This goes to show the excellent work and dedication of not just the team but also their coaches and organisers.
As for these who don’t participate in the competitions, they have access to Period 7s from Monday – Thursday every week, held at either Worplesdon or Foxhill golf courses. It offers a great way for those looking to improve at Golf and a way into the team and competitions. Lots of people are in junior squad training throughout the week and the people I have spoken to have said it is a very enjoyable experience.
As someone who knows very little about golf, I was amazed to see how much effort is put into it here at Gordon’s – both by the players and the staff. It appears to be an incredible way of getting into the sport, improving and showing your talent in competitions, with great results from the team coming in every year. As with all teams, they look for younger year groups to come into the team and have amazing facilities for those who do join. If you were considering joining the team, why not apply this upcoming term?
